Downstream from the Oranienburg mills, navigation conditions were difficult, which is why an artificial branch of the Havel River was created. It cut through the old Ruppiner Canal, leading to the creation of the four-lane canal. During the industrialization of the 19th century, various commercial and industrial enterprises settled along this important canal. Additionally, new connections were established through roads and railways.
